Our opinions

A century in fertilizer production and food production has given us extensive knowledge about agriculture, resources use and the environment. We form our positions on various subject matters based on facts as we know them. Explore our list of position papers below.

Agriculture and climate

Agriculture is responsible for about a quarter of global GHG emissions, yet high-yield farming is part of the solution to climate change. We promote climate-smart agriculture to ensure high productivity while avoiding soil depletion.

Through sustainable intensification, agriculture can provide an adequate supply of both food, fiber and biofuels. Environmental impacts and food security issues must however be carefully managed.

Circular economy

The principles of circular economy are an avenue to reducing waste, improving nutrient recycling, and establishing industrial symbiosis.

EU CAP towards 2020

The European Commission’s CAP reform provides an opportunity to make European agriculture more competitive and sustainable by applying best available farming practices.

EU policy asks

A strong European fertilizer industry is crucial for ensuring food security in Europe and globally and for ensuring that Europe can continue to take the lead in the green transition. Yara calls on the EU and national governments to take urgent action to reduce Europe’s food dependency on Russia.

Farm to Fork strategy

Yara backs the EU ambition of transforming the food system in Europe. Here's our roadmap for putting Europe's Farm to Fork Strategy into action.

Fertilizer use

We believe that balanced fertilization is critical to increase global crop production. We strongly support the application of nutrient management systems and tools designed to increase fertilizer use efficiency.

Fit for 55

Fit for 55 is a part of the European Green Deal, which is the European Union’s sustainable growth strategy for a climate neutral Europe. Yara supports the EU climate ambitions and is actively working to decarbonize our industry in collaboration with companies and governments.

Genetically modified organisms (GMO)

We see great potential to increase food production with existing methods, but believe that genetic modification of crops may be a useful scientific supplement to solve future food challenges.

Land use efficiency

The increasing demand for food should be met by improving yields on existing farmland, not by land use change. This is essential to protecting biodiversity and avoiding GHG emissions.

Organic farming

Improving the environmental performance of agriculture is best achieved by combining organic nutrients, mineral fertilizers and best farming practices to optimize the use of existing farmland.

Palm oil

Palm oil is the most widely used vegetable oil. Tropical rainforest has been cleared to establish oil palm plantations, which continues to increase the world's greenhouse gas emissions and has affected biodiversity.

Soil health

Soils are the foundation of agriculture and our food system. Soil health is vital for robust crop production and sustainable farming.

Water use efficiency

We have proved that good crop nutrition management can substantially reduce freshwater use in crop production.

Here's how we performed in 2021

Farmer and son in field

At Yara, we manage and measure our performance around the four pillars People, Planet, Prosperity, and Governance – and report accordingly. Our Sustainability Report 2021 provides details about our performance and governance of material sustainability topics.
